Sheela Surisetty's story of Flyn's Lessons.
To Whom it May Concern:
I sent this to Flyn to share this incredible story with him. I wanted to be sure he knew what he had done.
My daughter (7 years old) had taken 2 chess classes with Flyn in the last 10 days and here is what happened:
The class was 1.5 hours. Flyn recommended that I sit in the class so that I could observe. This is what I thought - after 30 minutes my daughter would say “I am done - Mommy!” (I am expecting to hear all kinds of excuses not play the chess game - you know how impossible it is to keep a 7-year-old engaged for more than 10 minutes).
To my surprise, she was just into the game, it was like he put a spell on her. She didn’t move out of her seat for 1.5 hours, fully focused and curious about the game. She listened to everything he said (she is shy and didn't talk much) and got very curious about the moves and everything that Flyn showed her.
Once the lesson was over, this is what I expected from her, “Mommy - the class is too long, I am tired!”, but this is what I heard from her for the other classes that are longer than 30 minutes.
Instead, this is what happened. She asked me to print the chess puzzles that Flyn asked her to work on. I asked my daughter “Aren’t you tired? You just had a class for 1.5 hours, don’t you wanna go and play?”, she replied, “No Mommy, I need to do the chess puzzles, Flyn asked me to do”. She followed me until I printed the puzzles and handed them off for her to solve. She wouldn’t stop, she would just keep solving the puzzles non-stop.
She watched the ‘Searching for Bobby Fischer movie that Flyn recommended. It’s like Flyn turned something ON within her. After her 2nd class with Flyn, she is starting to visualize the board in her head (without even knowing about it). She is talking about all the movies moves she made to give a checkmate for the game she played like 18 hours ago. She is replaying the moves in her head and explaining me how that was a bad move - it was like she was in a completely different world - a world of chess that Flyn introduced her to, a world of fun and curiosity and excitement.
It is super fun and exciting to see your kid enjoying the game and having fun with it. My daughter had been taking online chess classes for 6 months, but none of this had happened before the 2 lessons with Flyn. We see a completely different kid and her love for chess has grow grown exponentially.
We can see that she is really enjoying the game and having fun with it. She just wants to talk about chess all the time, and she is setting her own schedule to work on the puzzles and playing the games online too.
In just one class, Flyn has already identified some of the bad habits and silly mistakes that my daughter makes. He worked with her to ensure that bad habits go away, as they are much easier to prevent than fix the latter.
When he was pointing to some of the things she was doing, my husband (who knows how to play chess) said ‘yeah, I still do those because no one told me not to’.
Flyn has a unique way of teaching kids. He teaches them to be curious about the game, he introduces joy to the game, he makes the kids feel the fun in the game. He analyzed with her and helped her to discover why her moves are good or bad.
He makes sure she understood the concept and that the concept got etched into her brain - the right way.
This is what my daughter said: “In my online class we learn 2-3 topics or strategies, but today, with Flyn all I learned and played for 1.5 hours is how ‘Opposition’ works, now it is in my head - I can’t take it away”.
He not only helps my daughter to improve her game, he’s teaching us how to guide and help her succeed as well.
A lot of times, our kids show interest, but we are not fully equipped with the right resources to help them - Flyn has solved that problem for us.
My husband and I are highly educated and work in high-tech with busy lives, so we always look for quality education for our kids (something that they can enjoy and keep the passion for the rest of their lives).
Flyn is very passionate, and I could see he really cared about helping my daughter get better at chess. His passion is contagious, and got transferred to my daughter:)
Every time my daughter talks to Flyn she gets super fired up and wants to do more chess - he creates that enthusiasm and profound love for the game in kids.
If you are looking to give your kid a lifetime passion, Coach Flyn is the right person to help.
